बाह्य-स्वरूप :-प्रायः सब प्रांतों में इसका रोपण करते हैं। इसकी लता मृदु रोमश होती है। पत्ते 1 से 5 इंच के घेरे में गोलाकार, गहरे कटे किनारे वाले एवं 5 से 7 भागों में विभक्त रहतेे हैं। फूल चमकीले पीलेेेे रंग के होते हैं। फल 1 से 5 इंच लंबे और बीच में मोटे तथा दोनों तरफ नुकीले, त्रिकोण आकृति उभारों केे कारण उबड़ खाबड़ परंतु पकने पर पीलेेेेेे रंग के हो जाते है।
रासायनिक संघटन :-इसमें गंध युक्त उड़न शील तेल केरोटिन, ग्लूकोसाइड,
सेपोनिन एंव मामोरर्डिसाइन नाम के क्षाराभ पाए जाते हैं। बीजों में 32% विरेचक तेल पाये जाता है।
गुणधर्म:- करेला कड़वा,वातकारक,दीपन,भेदन,तिक्त, शीतल,वृष्य, हल्का, पित्तकारक, कफ , प्रमेह, ज्वरनाशक है।
भाव प्रकाश के अनुसार करेला शीतल, मलभेदक,दस्तावर,हल्का कड़वा और वातकारक है।
यह ज्वर,पित्त,कफ,रक्तविकार,पांडुरोग, प्रमेह और कृमिनाशक है।

English translation:-
Introduction: - Everyone is familiar with the qualities of bitter gourd. Diabetic patients especially consume its juices and vegetables.
Externally: - They usually plant it in all the provinces. Its creeper is mildly romantic. Leaves are spherical, deeply cut to the edge of 1 to 5 inches and divided into 5 to 7 parts. The flowers are bright yellow. Fruits are 1 to 5 inches long and thick in the middle and due to the pointed, triangular shape on both sides, they become bumpy but yellow when ripe.
Chemical composition: - Contains odorless fly oil kerotin, glucoside,
Saponins are found to be the base of the enzyme ang mamordicine. Seeds contain 32% diacritic oil.
Properties: - Bitter gourd is bitter, aphrodisiac, dipan, penetrating, tikt, cold, old, mild, gall bladder, Kapha, pramesh, febrifuge.
According to the Bhava Prakash, bitter gourd is cold, malodorous, aloes, mildly bitter and airy.
It is fever, pitta, phlegm, blood disorder, panduro, pramine and anthelmintic.
